Seizure and disposal

Five drums containing unsorted waste (including construction rubble, metals and combustible materials) were found in a former radiation protection zone, with no accompanying documentation.

Safetec GmbH was commissioned to carry out the entire process of radiological assessment and disposal of radioactive waste and also took on the role of external radiation protection officer for the project.

To begin with, a bespoke disposal plan was drawn up in close consultation with the relevant regulatory authority and the regional collection centre. The remaining waste materials were then sorted and assessed using radiological measurements, analyses and laboratory gamma spectrometry. These methods made it possible to reliably determine the relevant radionuclides and their activities. The materials were labelled, packed and prepared for transport in accordance with the guidelines issued by the regional collection centre.

By taking full responsibility for all technical, organisational and radiation protection-related tasks, it was possible to ensure the safe disposal of the residual materials contained in the drums.
